How LPG prices are set in India

India imports much of its LPG, so oil companies price it each month from the international LPG price (the Saudi contract price) and the rupee. Freight to the bottling plant, the distributor's commission and GST are added: 5% on domestic cylinders and 18% on commercial ones. Eligible households under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana get a subsidy credited to their bank account after each refill, so they pay the full price at delivery.

Saving on cooking gas

  • Book refills through your gas company’s app, website, SMS or a UPI app; you pay the amount on the delivery bill.
  • Check the cylinder’s seal and ask the delivery person to weigh it if it feels light: a full domestic cylinder has 14.2 kg of gas.
  • Pressure cookers, lids on pans and soaking pulses before cooking all cut gas use noticeably.
  • Each cylinder carries a test due date (such as A-27 for the first quarter of 2027); do not accept one that is past it.
