How to make a GST invoice

  1. Choose the document: tax invoice, bill of supply, proforma invoice or quotation.
  2. Add your business: name, address and GSTIN. Your state fills in from the GSTIN, and your logo and details are remembered for next time.
  3. Add the customer: their GSTIN if they are registered, and the place of supply.
  4. Add items: description, HSN/SAC code, quantity, rate, discount and GST rate. Tick “Rates include GST” if your prices already include tax.
  5. Check and download: fix anything in the checklist, then click “Download PDF / Print”.

What a GST tax invoice must include

Rule 46 of the CGST Rules lists what every tax invoice must show. This generator covers all of it:

  • Your name, address and GSTIN
  • A unique invoice number of up to 16 characters (letters, digits, “-” and “/”), in one series per financial year, and the date
  • The customer’s name, address and GSTIN if registered; for an unregistered customer and a value above ₹50,000, their address and state
  • HSN code for goods or SAC code for services, description, quantity and unit
  • Total value, taxable value after discount, and the rate and amount of CGST, SGST/UTGST or IGST
  • Place of supply with the state name, and the delivery address if different
  • Whether tax is payable on reverse charge
  • Signature of the supplier or an authorised signatory (not needed on an electronic invoice)

CGST, SGST, UTGST or IGST?

The tax depends on where you are and the place of supply. In the same state, GST is split equally into CGST and SGST: 18% becomes 9% + 9%. In a union territory without a legislature, UTGST replaces SGST. For another state, the full rate is charged as IGST. Check any amount with the GST calculator.

E-invoicing above ₹5 crore

If your aggregate turnover has exceeded ₹5 crore in any financial year since 2017-18, your B2B and export invoices must be registered on the Invoice Registration Portal, which returns an IRN and a signed QR code to print on the invoice. Without them, your buyer cannot claim input tax credit. This generator is for businesses below that limit and for B2C sales.

Frequently asked questions

Is this GST invoice generator really free?

Yes. There is no sign-up, no limit on invoices and no watermark. Your invoice is created in your browser and never uploaded; your business details are saved only on your device for the next invoice.

How do I download the invoice as a PDF?

Click “Download PDF / Print” and choose “Save as PDF” as the printer. The file is an exact A4 copy of the preview. On a phone, use the share or print option and pick “Save as PDF”.

When should I charge CGST and SGST, and when IGST?

Charge CGST and SGST (half each) when your business and the place of supply are in the same state, and IGST when they are in different states. In union territories without a legislature (Chandigarh, Ladakh, Lakshadweep, Andaman and Nicobar, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu) UTGST replaces SGST. The generator picks the right one from the two states.

What is the difference between a tax invoice and a bill of supply?

A registered business charging GST issues a tax invoice. A composition dealer, or a business selling only exempt goods or services, issues a bill of supply, which shows no tax. A composition dealer’s bill must say “Composition taxable person, not eligible to collect tax on supplies”.

How many digits of HSN code do I need on an invoice?

If your turnover in the previous year was up to ₹5 crore, show at least 4 digits of the HSN or SAC code on invoices to registered buyers; it is optional for sales to consumers. Above ₹5 crore, show 6 digits on every invoice.

Do I need an e-invoice instead?

Businesses whose turnover has crossed ₹5 crore in any year since 2017-18 must report B2B and export invoices to the government’s Invoice Registration Portal (IRP) and print the IRN and QR code it returns. This tool does not connect to the IRP, so use it for B2C sales, or if your turnover is below ₹5 crore.

How many copies of a GST invoice are needed?

For goods: three, marked “Original for recipient”, “Duplicate for transporter” and “Triplicate for supplier”. For services: two, the original for the recipient and the duplicate for the supplier. Tick the copies you need and each prints on its own page.
