How petrol prices are set in India
The pump price adds up the oil company's base price, which follows crude oil and the rupee, freight to the pump, the central excise duty, the dealer's commission and the state's VAT. Since 16 June 2017 the oil companies (Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum and HPCL) can revise the price every day, effective at 6 am. Changes to excise duty or a state's VAT move prices across a whole state, or the whole country, at once.
Before you fill up
- Check that the meter reads zero before filling starts.
- Every pump must display the day’s price; it should match the bill.
- Fuel cards and credit cards with fuel-surcharge waivers can save around 1% on each fill.
