What still works when banks are closed
- UPI and IMPS: instant transfers, 24×7.
- NEFT and RTGS: both run round the clock on every day of the year, holidays included.
- ATMs, debit and credit cards: cash withdrawals and card payments as usual.
- Net and mobile banking: bill payments, FD bookings and transfers.
- Waits for the next working day: cheque clearing, demand drafts, locker access and anything needing a branch visit.
Bank hours and Saturdays
Banks work Monday to Saturday. They close on every Sunday and on the second and fourth Saturday of each month; the first, third and fifth Saturdays are working days unless a holiday falls on them. Most branches serve customers from about 10 am to 4 pm, but timings vary by bank and branch, and some close earlier on Saturdays.
Holidays come from RBI's list for each of its regional offices. A state with more than one office, such as Maharashtra (Mumbai, Belapur, Nagpur) or Uttar Pradesh (Lucknow, Kanpur), can have a holiday in one city only; the answer above says so when that happens.
Frequently asked questions
Is the bank open today?
Banks are open Monday to Saturday except on Sundays, the second and fourth Saturdays of the month, and the holidays RBI lists for your state. This page checks all three for today's date in India; pick your state for a definite answer, because most bank holidays are regional.
Are banks open on Saturday?
On the first, third and fifth Saturdays, yes, unless a holiday falls that day. Every bank in India is shut on the second and fourth Saturdays and on Sundays.
Are banks closed for Diwali 2026?
It depends on the state. RBI lists Diwali-related bank holidays on 9 November 2026 (Chandigarh, Madhya Pradesh, Manipur, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh); 10 November 2026 (Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Sikkim, Uttarakhand); 11 November 2026 (Himachal Pradesh, Manipur, Sikkim, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal). Choose your state at the top of this page to see whether your branch is open.
Is the stock market open on Diwali 2026?
NSE and BSE are closed for Diwali Laxmi Pujan on 8 November 2026, but hold a one-hour Muhurat trading session that evening. The exchanges announce the exact timing by circular a few weeks before.
Do UPI, NEFT and RTGS work when banks are closed?
Yes. UPI, IMPS, NEFT and RTGS run 24×7 on every day of the year, and so do ATMs, net banking, mobile banking and card payments. Cheques deposited on a holiday are cleared on the next working day.
Why are banks closed in one state and open in another?
Bank holidays are declared under the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881, based on each state government's public holidays. RBI publishes a separate list for each of its regional offices, so a festival holiday in Kolkata can be a normal working day in Mumbai.
