How a PIN code works
Every PIN has six digits, read from left to right like an address that gets narrower: the first digit is the postal region, the first two the postal circle (usually a state), the first three the sorting district, and the last three the post office that delivers the mail.
| First digit | Region | States and union territories |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Northern | Chandigarh, Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Punjab |
| 2 | Northern | Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand |
| 3 | Western | Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, Gujarat, Rajasthan |
| 4 | Western | Chhattisgarh, Goa, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra |
| 5 | Southern | Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Puducherry, Telangana |
| 6 | Southern | Kerala, Lakshadweep, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu |
| 7 | Eastern | Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Odisha, Sikkim, Tripura, West Bengal |
| 8 | Eastern | Bihar, Jharkhand |
PINs starting with 9 belong to the Army Postal Service and are not tied to a place. A state can appear under two digits when a few of its PINs come from a neighbouring circle.
Head, sub and branch post offices
Of the 1,65,570 post offices in the directory, 811 are head offices, 24,542 sub offices and 1,40,217 branch offices (85%). A head office keeps the accounts for its postal division; sub offices serve towns and localities; branch offices are small rural offices attached to a sub or head office, and they usually share its PIN.
Delivery and non-delivery post offices
1,57,845 post offices (95%) deliver mail. The others are counter-only: you can post letters, send parcels or use savings schemes there, but mail for the area is delivered by another office with the same PIN.
Frequently asked questions
What is a PIN code?
A PIN (Postal Index Number) is the 6-digit code India Post uses to sort and deliver mail. The first digit is the postal region, the first two the postal circle, the first three the sorting district, and the last three the delivery post office.
How many PIN codes are there in India?
India Post's directory lists 19,584 PIN codes, shared by 1,65,570 post offices: 811 head offices, 24,542 sub offices and 1,40,217 branch offices.
Can two post offices have the same PIN code?
Yes. A PIN belongs to the delivery area of a head or sub post office, and the branch offices in its villages usually share it. Most PINs cover several post offices.
How do I find my PIN code?
