Why the rate you get is different
The rate on this page is a mid-market reference rate. Nobody sells QAR to you at exactly this price: each provider adds a margin, and some add fees on top.
- Bank transfers abroad: banks use their own card rate, usually 1% to 3% away from the reference rate, plus a transfer fee and GST on the conversion.
- Debit and credit cards: a foreign currency markup of about 2% to 3.5% of the amount, plus 18% GST on the markup. Some travel cards charge no markup.
- Cash at a money changer: the gap between their buying and selling rates is widest for cash, and widest of all at airports.
- Tax collected at source: remittances under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme above ₹10 lakh in a year attract TCS of 20% (2% for education or medical treatment); overseas tour packages attract 2% from the first rupee. You get it back against your income tax.
To see what you are really paying, divide the rupees debited by the QAR received and compare it with ₹26.46.
