What a free card is worth in a year

On the same ₹15,000 a month, Amazon Pay ICICI returns about ₹3,240 a year if ₹3,000 of it is on Amazon with Prime, while the IDFC FIRST cards return ₹990 on Millennia or Classic and ₹900 on WOW!. A paid card can beat these, but only once your spending clears its fee or its waiver.

Which free card to pick

  • You shop on Amazon: Amazon Pay ICICI.
  • You travel or shop abroad: an IDFC FIRST card, with no forex markup.
  • You have no credit history or income proof: IDFC FIRST WOW!, backed by a fixed deposit of ₹20,000 or more.
  • You want a simple card from a large bank: ICICI Platinum Chip.

Charges that still apply

"Lifetime free" covers the joining and annual fee only. Interest on an unpaid balance (3.75% a month at ICICI Bank), late payment fees and cash withdrawal charges still apply, and add-on or personalised IDFC FIRST cards carry a ₹499 + GST fee. Set up an auto-debit for the full amount due and the card stays free.

How we compared these cards

Every fee, reward rate and cap here was read on the issuing bank's own website on 6 October 2026; each card links to the page we checked. Where a figure could not be confirmed on the bank's site, the card is left out. Points are converted to rupees at the value the bank itself states, and the "value a month" and "net a year" columns apply each card's caps to the spending described above the table. Surcharge waivers, welcome vouchers and milestone gifts are left out of those columns.

SmartFigure earns nothing from these cards. There are no affiliate links and no paid placements, and the order comes only from the arithmetic. This is not a recommendation: banks revise card terms often, so read the current terms on the bank's site before you apply.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the best lifetime free credit card in October 2026?

On ₹15,000 a month, Amazon Pay ICICI Bank Credit Card gives back the most, about ₹3,240 a year. If you rarely shop on Amazon, an IDFC FIRST card with no forex markup may suit you better.

Is a lifetime free card really free?

There is no joining or annual fee, but other charges still apply: interest on unpaid balances, late payment fees, cash withdrawal fees and, on IDFC FIRST cards, ₹99 + GST each time you redeem points. Paying the full bill on time keeps the card free.

Can a bank start charging a fee on a lifetime free card later?

A bank can change card terms, but RBI’s card directions require it to tell you in advance and to take your explicit consent for changes such as an upgrade. If you do not agree, you can close the card, which the bank must do within seven working days of your request.

Does a free card hurt my credit score?

No. The fee makes no difference to your score; what counts is paying on time and using a small share of your limit. An old free card you keep open also lengthens your credit history.

Will my bank close a card I do not use?

Under RBI rules a bank can start closing a card that has not been used for more than a year, after telling you. One small purchase a year keeps it active.
