What you will actually pay at the jeweller
The rate above is for the gold alone. A jeweller's bill adds making charges, usually 8% to 25% of the gold value depending on the design, and 3% GST on the gold and making charges together. Here is 10 grams of 22 carat jewellery in Kerala at a 12% making charge:
| Gold value (10 g × ₹13,660) | ₹1,36,600 |
|---|---|
| Making charges (12%) | ₹16,392 |
| GST (3%) | ₹4,590 |
| Total | ₹1,57,582 |
Ask for the making charge as a percentage before you choose a design, check that the piece has a BIS hallmark with a six-digit HUID, and make sure the bill shows the weight, purity and rate. To check the GST on your bill, use the GST calculator.
Buying gold for Dhanteras 2026
Dhanteras falls on Friday, 6 November 2026, and Diwali on Sunday, 8 November. Gold demand peaks in the days before, and many jewellers open pre-booking schemes that lock today's rate against a small advance. If you are buying as an investment rather than as jewellery, coins, gold ETFs or digital gold avoid making charges altogether. Gold you sell later is taxed as a capital gain; the capital gains calculator shows how much.
Why the gold rate differs between cities
The base price follows the international gold price, the rupee's value against the dollar, and import duty. On top of that, transport and local costs, and the daily rates set by local jewellers' associations, make the rate a little different from city to city. Within a city, individual jewellers can still quote slightly higher or lower.
How we get these rates
We read the published 22 carat rate for each city from several public jewellery rate sources a few times a day and show the middle value, so one outlier does not move the figure. 24 carat and 18 carat rates are worked out from the 22 carat rate by purity (99.9% and 75%). A city keeps the previous day's rate until the new one is published.

What is the difference between 22K and 24K gold?
24 karat gold is 99.9% pure and is used for coins and bars. It is too soft for most jewellery, so jewellery is usually 22 karat (91.6% gold, marked 916) or 18 karat (75%). The price follows the gold content.
What is the price of 1 sovereign (8 grams) of gold?
One sovereign, or pavan, is 8 grams. At today's 22 carat rate in Kerala it costs ₹1,09,280, before making charges and GST.
Does the gold rate include GST and making charges?
No. The rate is for the gold alone. A jeweller adds making charges, often 8% to 25% of the gold value, and 3% GST on the gold and making charges together. For 10 grams of 22 carat gold with 12% making charges, the bill comes to about ₹1,57,582.
When does the gold rate change?
Jewellers usually set the day’s rate in the morning, by about 10:30 am, following international prices and the rupee. On a volatile day it can be revised again in the afternoon. This page checks for new rates several times a day.
How do I know my gold is pure?
Buy only BIS-hallmarked jewellery. Every hallmarked piece carries the BIS mark, the purity (such as 22K916) and a six-digit HUID code, which you can check in the BIS Care app.
