The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has given taxpayers whose accounts need an audit 21 more days for this year’s filings. The tax audit report is now due on 21 October 2026 instead of 30 September, and the income tax return (ITR) for these taxpayers is now due on 21 November 2026 instead of 31 October. The extension was announced on 28–29 September 2026 and applies to assessment year 2026-27 (income earned in FY 2025-26). Here is who it covers, who it does not, and what to do.

The short answer

  • Tax audit report: now due 21 October 2026 (was 30 September).
  • ITR for audit cases: now due 21 November 2026 (was 31 October).
  • Who it covers: taxpayers whose accounts must be audited, such as businesses and professionals above the audit limits under section 44AB, companies, and working partners of firms whose accounts are audited.
  • Who it does not cover: taxpayers with transfer pricing reports (Form 3CEB, section 92E). Their ITR due date stays 30 November 2026.
  • Salaried people and small businesses without an audit: no change. Your due date passed on 31 July or 31 August, but you can still file a belated return until 31 December 2026.

Old and new dates for AY 2026-27

What Original due date New due date
Tax audit report (audit cases) 30 September 2026 21 October 2026
ITR for audit cases 31 October 2026 21 November 2026
ITR for transfer pricing cases (Form 3CEB) 30 November 2026 30 November 2026 (unchanged)
ITR-1 and ITR-2 (salaried, most individuals) 31 July 2026 Passed, no extension
ITR-3 and ITR-4, no audit 31 August 2026 Passed, no extension
Belated or revised return, anyone 31 December 2026 31 December 2026 (unchanged)

In CBDT’s words, it “has decided to extend the aforesaid due date of furnishing of Return of Income from 31st October, 2026 to 21st November, 2026” for the audit category. The formal notification follows the announcement.

Who counts as an “audit case”

The extension applies to the category in Explanation 2 to section 139(1) of the Income-tax Act, 1961, the group whose return is normally due on 31 October. In practice, that means:

You are… Covered by the extension?
A business whose turnover crosses the tax audit limit (section 44AB) Yes
A professional (doctor, lawyer, consultant) whose receipts cross the audit limit Yes
A company Yes
A working partner in a firm whose accounts are audited Yes
A business with international or specified domestic transactions (Form 3CEB) No, still 30 November
A salaried employee or pensioner No, your date was 31 July
A small business or professional using presumptive tax with no audit No, your date was 31 August

If you are not sure whether you need an audit, check with your chartered accountant before assuming you have until November.

What to do now

  1. If you are an audit case, use the extra time, but do not wait for the last day. The income tax portal is usually slowest in the final days before a due date.
  2. Pay any balance tax first. An extension of the filing date does not always waive interest on unpaid tax. Paying self-assessment tax now stops interest from building up.
  3. Keep your audit report ahead of your return. The audit report (21 October) must be filed before the ITR (21 November), and your CA needs time between the two.
  4. If you are salaried and still have not filed, this extension does not help you. File a belated return before 31 December 2026; see how to file a late return.
  5. Check your tax under both regimes with the income tax calculator, and work out any gains from shares or property with the capital gains calculator.

Why this year’s deadlines matter more than usual

AY 2026-27 is one of the last years filed under the Income-tax Act, 1961. The new Income-tax Act, 2025 takes over for later years, with “tax year” replacing “assessment year” and return filing moving from section 139 to section 263. The dates in this post apply only to returns for income earned in FY 2025-26.

Frequently asked questions

Has the ITR deadline been extended for salaried employees? No. This extension is only for taxpayers whose accounts need an audit. The due date for salaried people and most individuals was 31 July 2026. You can still file a belated return until 31 December 2026, with a late fee.

What is the new tax audit report due date for AY 2026-27? 21 October 2026, extended from 30 September 2026.

What is the new ITR due date for audit cases? 21 November 2026, extended from 31 October 2026.

Does the extension apply to transfer pricing cases? No. Taxpayers who must file Form 3CEB under section 92E keep their ITR due date of 30 November 2026.

What happens if I miss 21 November? You can still file a belated return until 31 December 2026, but you pay a late fee under section 234F, interest on unpaid tax, and you lose the right to carry forward most losses. A late audit report can also attract a separate penalty.
