What is behind the numbers

The headline is strong, but the split matters. GST on imports grew 25.9% while domestic GST grew 10.1%, and over the half-year the gap is wider: 27.1% against 6.1%. Part of the import growth reflects higher prices of what India buys from abroad. Crude oil has been above $100 a barrel and the rupee has been weak, near 96 to the dollar, so the rupee value of imports, and the GST collected on them, is higher even if volumes are not.

Domestic collections, which track spending inside the country more closely, are growing at a steadier pace. The festive season in October and November usually lifts domestic GST, so the next two months’ data will show whether that gap narrows.

What it means for you

If you are… Takeaway
A consumer Strong GST numbers do not change the GST you pay. Rates are set by the GST Council, not by monthly collections.
A small business Higher collections often come with tighter scrutiny of returns and input tax credit. Keep your GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B in sync.
An investor Tax collections are one sign of economic activity. Read them alongside inflation, the rupee and company results, not on their own.
Waiting on a GST refund Domestic refunds were 13.5% lower than a year earlier. If yours is pending, check its status on the GST portal.

To check the GST on an invoice or price, use the GST calculator. If you issue bills, the free GST invoice generator works out CGST, SGST and IGST for you, and the HSN code finder gives the right code and rate.
